Amy Lankutis, Middle School ASD Teacher, wins Teacher of the Year Award

For Amy Lankutis, the classroom isn’t just a space for modified learning; it’s a place where every student is "just another seventh grader." After starting in elementary education, Lankutis found her true calling in the Middle School Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) center at Hodgkins Leadership Academy. She brought with her a philosophy built on trust and a "mountain" of high expectations.

By teaching the art of self-advocacy, giving students the tools to say, "I’m mad at you," she isn’t just managing behaviors, she’s preparing them for a world where their voices must be heard. Whether navigating school dances or practicing how to order a Coke at a restaurant, Lankutis’s students learn that their unique way of processing the world is only one part of their story.

"I hold my kids accountable. It’s like a mountain. Those expectations are on top... and my kids tend to circle around or go up and fall backwards. But we’re there with the supports," Lankutis says.

Her approach earned her Teacher of the Year honors, with Hodgkins Principal, Amber Swieckowski, citing a "genius" for seeing unique strengths in every child. For Lankutis, the award reflects the community she has built, where general education peers act as mentors and every student is included.

"I love this age," she says. "I’ve been graced with an admin that tells me, 'You are the expert.' They support the decision to include these kids as much as possible."
